Quasimoto is the eccentric alter ego of Madlib, a prominent producer and MC in the West Coast hip-hop scene. Initially part of the group Lootpack, Madlib delved into his Quasimoto side project in 1996 at Peanut Butter Wolf's encouragement. Quasimoto's unique sound featured high-pitched, whimsical raps over jazz-infused beats, leading to critical acclaim and comparisons to hip-hop innovators like Prince Paul and Kool Keith. The project's debut album, The Unseen, was released in 2000, followed by Astronaut EP in 2002 and The Further Adventures of Lord Quas in 2005, all on the Stones Throw label. Yessir Whatever, a compilation of rare tracks, dropped in 2013.
Madlib, under his alter ego Quasimoto, gained underground popularity with his experimental approach to hip-hop, blending surreal lyrics with jazz loops and a laid-back vibe. The debut Quasimoto single, Hittin' Hooks, in 1999, set the stage for the release of The Unseen, a critically acclaimed album that showcased Madlib's innovative production style. Subsequent projects like Astronaut EP and The Further Adventures of Lord Quas continued to push boundaries in hip-hop, solidifying Quasimoto as a respected and enigmatic figure in the genre.
