Pelican, a Chicago-based instrumental post-metal band, delves into heavy noise, crafting crushing yet ethereal compositions. Since their formation in 2001, they have explored stoner rock, doom, and post-metal on albums like Australasia (2003), City of Echoes (2007), Forever Becoming (2013), and Nighttime Stories (2019). The band, influenced by Neurosis and often compared to Isis, found a home at Aaron Turner's Hydra Head Records, releasing their debut EP in 2003 and subsequent critically acclaimed albums like The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon the Thaw (2004) and What We All Come to Need (2009).

In 2015, Pelican released the Cliff EP featuring album tracks in various versions, including remixes by Justin Broadrick and others. The EP also included a vocal version with Allen Epley and a previously unreleased track. The band had a productive 2019 with a remixed Forever Becoming, a Record Store Day single, and the release of their new studio album, Nighttime Stories, showcasing their continued exploration of heavy, atmospheric soundscapes.
