Pastor Troy, known for his introspective and sincere approach to Dirty South rap, emerged as a standout in the early 2000s Southern rap scene. Raised in Atlanta, GA, by a father who was a former drill instructor turned pastor, Pastor Troy was influenced by both his family and street culture. Making his debut in 1999 with the underground album We Ready - I Declare War, Pastor Troy gained attention with the diss track "No Mo Play in G.A." before releasing subsequent albums and his major-label debut, Face Off, in 2001.
His second album for Universal, Universal Soldier (2002), featuring production from Timbaland and Lil Jon, marked Pastor Troy's peak success with charting singles and high Billboard rankings. Despite subsequent albums not matching this commercial success, Pastor Troy continued to release music independently at a rapid pace, showcasing his dedication to his craft and maintaining a loyal fan base.
