Passion Pit, originating from Boston, Massachusetts, was founded by singer and songwriter Michael Angelakos as a solo project to create a gift for his girlfriend, resulting in the EP Chunk of Change. The project evolved into a band, performing live and opening for notable acts like Death Cab for Cutie. The EP gained attention for its track "Sleepyhead" and was re-released by Frenchkiss label in 2008, leading to the band's debut album, Manners, released in 2009 by Columbia Records and Frenchkiss. The band's second album, Gossamer, followed in 2012, reaching high chart positions in the U.S. and internationally.
Following lineup changes and personal struggles, Passion Pit released their third album, Kindred, in 2015, with Angelakos as the sole credited member. The band continued to tour and release music, with Angelakos also founding the Wishart Group to support musicians with mental health issues. In 2017, Passion Pit released Tremendous Sea of Love and embarked on tours, including a celebration of the tenth anniversary of their debut album, Manners, in 2019.
