Biography

Formed in Glasgow in 1976, the Scottish neo-pop band Orange Juice, previously known as the Nu-Sonics, emerged as a reaction to the macho aggression of punk. Signed to the Postcard label by Edwyn Collins, their debut single "Falling and Laughing" in 1980 marked the beginning of their critical acclaim and establishment as a leading independent pop group. The addition of Zeke Manyika in 1982 brought a more complex fusion of pop and blue-eyed soul, leading to the release of the ambitious album Rip It Up.

Despite initial success, Orange Juice faced challenges with Polydor, leading to lineup changes and a decline in chart performance. Edwyn Collins eventually found commercial success as a solo artist, while the band continued to influence a new generation of Scottish bands like Belle & Sebastian and Franz Ferdinand. The 2005 compilation The Glasgow School further solidified Orange Juice's legacy among younger fans.
