Biography
Olu Dara, known for his avant-garde jazz trumpet playing, rose to prominence in the mid-'70s. He was a key figure in the loft jazz culture of New York City, collaborating with artists like David Murray, Henry Threadgill, and Cassandra Wilson. Despite intermittent jazz appearances in the '80s and '90s, Dara released his debut album, "In the World: From Natchez to New York," in 1998, showcasing his blend of country-blues and African-American folk traditions. He followed up with "Neighborhoods" in 2001, featuring his compositions and versatile musical talents.
Before recording under his own name, Olu Dara was a respected trumpeter with a bold, roots-inspired style reminiscent of jazz legends Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge. He made a name for himself in the '80s and '90s through collaborations with various jazz artists, including performances with his own Okra Orchestra and Natchezsippi Dance Band. Dara's solo albums, starting with "In the World: From Natchez to New York," highlighted his skills as a multi-instrumentalist, composer, and vocalist, drawing from diverse musical influences beyond the free jazz realm. His unique blend of genres and talents continued to captivate audiences into the new millennium with the release of "Neighborhoods" in 2001.
