Biography

Old & in the Way was a short-lived bluegrass group led by Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead, also featuring David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and John Kahn. Formed by Garcia in 1973 to reconnect with his bluegrass roots, the band played a series of shows at the Boarding House in San Francisco, which were later released as their self-titled album in 1975. Despite disbanding after this release, the members continued to collaborate in various formations over the years, with posthumous albums released after Garcia's death in 1995.

Old & in the Way, a project led by Jerry Garcia, showcased the talents of bluegrass musicians David Grisman, Vassar Clements, Peter Rowan, and John Kahn. The group's sole album, recorded during a series of shows in 1973, was released in 1975 and became a classic in the bluegrass genre.
