After early jazz gigs and recording with artists like Archie Shepp and Pharoah Sanders, Connors signed with Buddah's Cobblestone label in 1972, leading to successful R&B albums and collaborations with singers such as Michael Henderson and Phyllis Hyman. Despite a quieter period in the 1980s, Connors staged a comeback in the 1990s and continued releasing urban contemporary music into the 21st century on labels like Motown and Shanachie Records.
