MV Bill, a rap artist hailing from the violent favela of Cidade de Deus in Rio de Janeiro, gained rapid popularity for shedding light on the harsh living conditions in his community. Refusing to disclose his real name, MV, which stands for "Mensageiro da Verdade" (Messenger of Truth), is known for his polemic actions, such as performing with a toy gun at the Free Jazz Festival in 1999. His music video for "Soldado do Morro" sparked passionate debates and a police investigation, garnering support from the Minister of Justice. Bill's debut album in 1993, followed by his socially critical solo album in 1999, solidified his influential stance within the music industry.

MV Bill's activism extends beyond music, as he aims to establish trade schools in Cidade de Deus and co-founded the Partido Popular Poder para a Maioria (PPPomar). Known for his impactful performances, he drew a large audience at the Festival de Verão de Salvador in 2001 and organized the "Desarme seu Filho" campaign in collaboration with various NGOs.
