Motograter is a genre-defying metal band founded in Santa Barbara, California, and now based in Austin, Texas. The band takes its name from a homemade instrument made of heavy cable, cranks, and gears. Formed in 1995 by Bruce "Grater" Butler and Joey "Smur" Krzywonski, the band blends industrial, rap, and experimental nu-metal. Motograter signed with Elektra Records in 2002 and released their self-titled debut album in 2003. Over the years, the band experienced multiple lineup changes, going on hiatus in 2005 and reforming in 2009 with a new lineup. In 2017, they released their sophomore album, Desolation, under Megadeth bassist Dave Ellefson's EMP Label Group.
