Biography
MFSB, short for Mother Father Sister Brother, were the leading instrumental group of Philadelphia soul in the '70s. Formed in 1971 as the house band at Gamble and Huff's Sigma Sound studios, the core members had already made a name for themselves, backing various artists and releasing singles under different names. MFSB became renowned for their work with Philadelphia International, backing hits for artists like the O'Jays and Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes, while also recording their own jazz-infused soul grooves.
In 1973, MFSB gained widespread recognition with their original theme for the TV show Soul Train, titled "T.S.O.P." The success of the theme song catapulted MFSB to stardom, leading to a Grammy win and a gold-selling album. Throughout the '70s, the group transitioned into disco, collaborating with Dexter Wansel and contributing to the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. Despite diminishing commercial success in the late '70s, MFSB's influence on Philly soul and disco remained significant until their disbandment in 1981.
