Memphis Slim

Renowned blues pianist Memphis Slim, born John "Peter" Chatman in Memphis, established himself as a leading figure in the genre by developing a unique style influenced by Big Bill Broonzy rather than imitating his idol, Roosevelt Sykes. After making a name for himself in Chicago in the late '30s and '40s, Slim caught the attention of various record labels, including Bluebird, King, and Miracle, producing hits like "Lend Me Your Love" and "Nobody Loves Me."

In the early '50s, Slim continued to evolve his sound by collaborating with guitarist Matt Murphy and recording with labels like Chess and United Records. By the end of the decade, he found success at Vee-Jay Records, showcasing his signature blues style with the support of a talented band. In 1962, Slim made the bold decision to permanently move to Paris, where he enjoyed a revered status in the blues community until his passing in 1988, solidifying his legacy as an expatriate blues icon.
