Biography
McCoy Tyner's post-John Coltrane career has been anything but anticlimactic, solidifying his status as one of the most influential jazz pianists in the last 50 years alongside Bill Evans. His powerful virtuosity and unique chord voicings have left a lasting impact on the genre, inspiring a generation of younger pianists. Tyner's unwavering style, reminiscent of Thelonious Monk, has continuously evolved and grown stronger, evident in his consistent output of stimulating recordings over the years.
Growing up in Philadelphia and making his mark with the classic Coltrane quartet, Tyner's career saw ups and downs before finally being recognized as one of the greats upon signing with Milestone in 1972. Since then, he has led his own groups, ranging from quartets to big bands, and has released a series of acclaimed albums, including collaborations with notable artists like Sonny Rollins and Stephane Grappelli. His journey through various labels culminated in a successful stint with Telarc, showcasing his timeless talent and innovative spirit in albums like "Jazz Roots" and "Illuminations." In 2007, Tyner returned with a stellar studio album featuring saxophonist Joe Lovano, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Jeff "Tain" Watts.
