Marcy Playground originated in New York City in the mid-'90s, with members John Wozniak and Dylan Keefe hailing from Minneapolis and Dan Rieser from Ohio. The band's name came from the Marcy Open School, where Wozniak was inspired by a challenging childhood experience. Introduced by jazz guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, Wozniak and Keefe formed the band and brought in Rieser on drums. After signing with Capitol Records, their debut album in 1997 included the hit single "Sex and Candy," leading to platinum success. Despite a mixed reception to their sophomore album, Marcy Playground continued to release music throughout the 2000s, including remixes in 2010.
The trio of Marcy Playground, initially meeting in NYC, drew inspiration from childhood experiences at the Marcy Open School and a shared love for music. Following the success of their debut album featuring the hit "Sex and Candy," the band faced criticism with their second release but persevered with subsequent albums in the 2000s.
