In 1996, former Waterboy and Sharon Shannon bassist Trevor Hutchinson joined forces with guitarist Donogh Hennessy during a Scandinavian tour, laying the foundation for what would become the highly acclaimed Irish band Lúnasa. The addition of uillean piper John McSherry, flutist/piper Michael McGoldrick, and talented musicians like Kevin Crawford and Sean Smyth propelled Lúnasa to success with their debut album in 1997, garnering critical acclaim and a devoted following. Over the years, the band continued to evolve their sound, incorporating live grooves and pushing musical boundaries, culminating in the release of albums like Otherworld in 1999 and The Kinnitty Sessions in 2004, solidifying their reputation as a powerhouse in Celtic music.
Throughout extensive touring in Europe, America, and beyond, Lúnasa captivated audiences with their spirited performances and dedication to their craft, balancing a serious approach to music with a lighthearted sense of humor. The band’s ability to capture the energy of their live shows in studio recordings, as demonstrated on albums like Otherworld and The Kinnitty Sessions, showcased their talent and innovation within the traditional Irish music genre. With each release, Lúnasa continued to push the boundaries of Celtic music, attracting a global fan base and cementing their status as one of the most influential contemporary Irish bands.
