Luke Kelly

Luke Kelly, an iconic figure in Irish folk music, rose to fame as a founding member of the Dubliners during the folk revival of the late '60s. Born in Dublin in 1940, Kelly's musical journey began in Leeds where he honed his folk chops and developed strong left-wing political views. Joining the Dublin folk scene in 1962, Kelly's involvement with the Dubliners led to international success with hits like "Seven Drunken Nights" and "Black Velvet Band." Despite his brief departure from the group in 1964, Kelly's solo work and collaborations with other musicians showcased his versatile talent, including a memorable role as King Herod in Jesus Christ Superstar. Tragically, Kelly passed away in 1984 due to a brain tumor, leaving behind a lasting legacy in Irish folk music.
