Lucky Dube

Lucky Dube, born Ermelo Dube, is a prominent South African artist known for his transition from traditional Zulu mbaqanga to reggae in 1984 as a means of expressing his opposition to apartheid. Dube's musical journey began at an early age, showcasing his talents in various school and band settings before achieving success with his reggae albums, notably "Think About the Children" and "Slave," which sold over five hundred thousand copies.

Dube's shift to reggae was influenced by the political and spiritual struggles faced by his fellow South Africans, leading to critical acclaim and commercial success despite initial opposition from the government. His music has been recognized for its contribution to the Black liberation movement, with The Village Voice and Niceup Magazine acknowledging the unique voice Dube brought to reggae through his lyrical content and energetic performances.
