Biography
Larry Carlton, a highly successful guitarist and composer, rose to fame in the late '60s Los Angeles studio scene before becoming a prominent contemporary jazz artist. Noted for his lithe technique, blues-inflected sound, and distinctive use of volume pedals, he gained recognition as a member of the Crusaders and went on to become a sought-after session player with credits on over 100 gold albums. Carlton signed with Warner Bros. in 1978 and began a prolific solo career, earning four Grammy Awards and establishing himself as a respected performer with over 30 albums and a busy touring schedule.
A native of Torrance, California, Carlton's early influences included jazz legends like Joe Pass, Wes Montgomery, and Barney Kessel, as well as blues greats like B.B. King. He honed his skills in the Los Angeles music scene, touring with the Fifth Dimension and doing studio work for artists such as Vikki Carr and Andy Williams. Joining the Crusaders in 1971, Carlton developed his signature style before launching a successful solo career. Despite a setback in the late '80s when he was shot, Carlton persevered, releasing albums, winning awards, and collaborating with renowned artists throughout the decades, solidifying his legacy in the world of music.
