Biography

Originating from Palm Desert, CA, Kyuss, pronounced "kai-uss," is often likened to a heavy metal equivalent of the Velvet Underground. Despite minimal commercial success, their blend of sludgy guitars, spacey jams, and thrash metal rhythms defined the stoner rock scene of the 1990s, influencing numerous underground metal bands. Formed in 1987, Kyuss gained recognition with their album Blues for the Red Sun in 1992, solidifying their signature sound of doom heaviness, feedback fuzz, and psychedelic rock.

Signed by Elektra Records in the mid-1990s, Kyuss released Welcome to Sky Valley in 1994 and ...And the Circus Leaves Town in 1995, showcasing their creative promise and growing fan base. Internal conflicts led to the band's eventual disbandment, with members pursuing various musical projects. Vocalist John Garcia collaborated with bands like Slo Burn and Unida, while guitarist Josh Homme ventured into production and later formed Queens of the Stone Age with original Kyuss bassist Nick Oliveri. Despite Kyuss' short-lived success, their influence remains legendary in the underground metal scene.
