Kurupt, born Ricardo Brown in Philadelphia in 1972, gained prominence as part of Death Row Records alongside Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. Despite his initial success with guest appearances on albums like The Chronic and Doggystyle, Kurupt struggled to establish himself as a solo artist. His solo albums, including Kuruption! and Tha Streetz Is a Mutha, failed to make a significant commercial impact. Kurupt also collaborated with Daz Dillinger on projects like Dogg Food and Dillinger & Young Gotti, which had a more underground sound. Despite these efforts, Kurupt's crossover attempts on albums like Space Boogie: Smoke Oddessey did not resonate with a wider audience.

In 2002, Kurupt returned to Death Row Records to work with Suge Knight in an attempt to revive the label. This partnership resulted in the release of Against tha Grain in 2004.
