Kurtis Blow

Kurtis Blow, born Kurtis Walker in Harlem in 1959, is a pioneering figure in hip-hop history. As the first commercially successful rap artist, he broke new ground by signing with a major label, achieving a gold-certified single with "The Breaks," and embarking on national and international tours. Despite his early influence and importance, Blow's records have not all stood the test of time, but his music captures the exuberance of hip-hop's early days. His impact can be seen in his collaborations with legendary DJs like Grandmaster Flash and his role in shaping the careers of future hip-hop icons like Run-D.M.C.

Blow's success continued with hits like "The Breaks" and "If I Ruled the World," but he faced challenges as hip-hop evolved and his style became outdated. Despite waning commercial success, Blow remained active in the music industry, producing and hosting a radio show. His legacy is evident in the revival of his music by younger artists and his contributions to hip-hop culture through projects like the three-volume series Kurtis Blow Presents the History of Rap. In later years, Blow diversified his career by founding the Hip Hop Church, becoming an ordained minister, and recording religious rap albums with the Trinity, solidifying his place as a hip-hop elder statesman.
