King Curtis, born Curtis Ousley in Fort Worth, Texas, was a prominent R&B tenor saxophonist known for his session work in New York during the mid-'50s. His long association with Atco/Atlantic began in 1958, and he achieved success with hits like "Soul Twist" and "Soul Serenade." Curtis also took on a more active studio role, producing for other artists and leading Aretha Franklin's backing band, the Kingpins. Tragically, he was murdered in 1971, but his legacy was honored with induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2000.

His career spanned various labels and genres, including jazz and R&B, with notable recordings for Atco/Atlantic, Capitol, and Enjoy. King Curtis' influence extended beyond his own music as he became a sought-after session leader and producer at Atlantic, shaping the sound of other artists.
