Kid ’n Play

Kid 'n Play, pioneers in transforming rap's hardcore image into positive, teen-friendly music, rose to fame with their platinum album 2 Hype in 1988. The duo, comprised of Kid (Christopher Reid) and Play (Christopher Martin), transitioned from high school rivals to collaborators under the management of Hurby "Luv Bug" Azor. Despite their recording activity waning in the gangsta-dominated '90s, Kid 'n Play found success in films, starring in two sequels to House Party and the 1991 teen flick Class Act. Their clean-cut image and catchy tracks, like the near-Top Ten R&B hit "Rollin' with Kid 'n Play," contributed to their enduring popularity.

Kid 'n Play's early success was marked by their unique sound, which combined disco and pop influences rather than the typical James Brown samples prevalent in the mid-'80s rap scene. Their foray into films, starting with House Party in 1990, solidified their status as entertainment icons, with a Saturday-morning cartoon show and a successful LP, Funhouse, following suit. Despite a shift towards a more authentic style with their 1991 album Face the Nation, Kid 'n Play remained true to their signature sound. While their music output decreased in the following years, the duo's impact on rap's evolution and their legacy as positive role models in the industry endures.
