Biography

José Carreras, a renowned figure in contemporary opera, gained fame as one of the Three Tenors alongside Luciano Pavarotti and Placido Domingo. Born in Catalonia on December 5, 1946, Carreras showcased his musical talent from a young age and made his operatic debut at just 11 years old. Despite initially studying chemistry, Carreras transitioned to a successful career in music after winning the International Verdi Singing competition in Parma.

His international debut came in 1971 with Donizetti's Maria Stuarda in London, and he went on to perform at prestigious venues such as the New York City Opera, the Metropolitan Opera, Covent Garden, and Milan's Scala. Carreras collaborated closely with Herbert von Karajan, performing and recording numerous works together. Throughout his career, he recorded over 50 complete operas and 40 recitals, and in 1992, he directed the music for the Summer Olympic Games in Barcelona. Carreras also chronicled his journey, including his battle with leukemia, in his autobiography, "José Carreras, Singing from the Soul."
