Embracing solo dub experiments, his collaborations with jazz-pop keyboardist Nick Straker and producer Tony Mansfield further showcased his diverse musical talents. Under the alias Blackbeard, Bovell released the influential albums Strictly Dub Wize in 1978 and I Wah Dub in 1980, before transitioning back to his real name for the genre-blending Brain Damage in 1981. Throughout the early '80s, Bovell continued to expand his repertoire through collaborations with artists like Linton Kwesi Johnson and Alpha Blondy, culminating in the reggae-infused Audio Active album in 1986 with the Dub Band.
