Delta 5

Delta 5, a key figure of the feminist new wave from Leeds, England, was formed in 1979 by vocalist/guitarist Julz Sale, fretless bassist Ros Allen, and bassist Bethan Peters. With the addition of guitarist Alan Riggs and drummer Kelvin Knight, they released their debut single "Mind Your Own Business," quickly rising to prominence in the Leeds post-punk scene. Inspired by local heroes like the Mekons and Gang of Four, Delta 5's abrasive funk sound and involvement in the Rock Against Racism movement set them apart as political leaders in the music community.

Despite achieving success with singles like "You" and a U.S. tour, Delta 5 faced challenges with their debut LP, "See the Whirl," released in 1981 under Pre, a Charisma subsidiary. The album suffered from over-production and failed to meet critical and commercial expectations, leading to the band's breakup shortly after. Their music remained elusive until the release of the Singles & Sessions compilation in 2006. The legacy of Delta 5 lives on, though the passing of founding member Julz Sale in 2021 marked the end of an era for the influential band.
