Damas Gratis was founded by Pablo Lescano, who had previously been a member of the band Amar Azul as a keyboardist. He also created and composed for the first "cumbia villera" group in Argentina, Flor de Piedra, although he did not play music in it. His sister, Romina Lescano, did participate in Flor de Piedra and later joined him in Damas Gratis.
The style that began with Flor de Piedra reached its peak of professionalism with Damas Gratis, becoming a significant success that overshadowed many imitations. The band played a key role in bringing tropical music to diverse social sectors, a feat achieved by few groups in the history of the tropical music scene. Damas Gratis' music and rhythm evolved beyond traditional tropical music, garnering attention from leading newspapers and magazines, sparking discussions about villa culture and revolutionizing the tropical music scene.
