Cuco Valoy, a versatile musician from the Dominican Republic, began his career in the mid-50s as part of the duo Los Ahijados with his brother Martín. By the 70s, Valoy had formed a 12-piece band known as Nueva Tribu, which included talented musicians such as his sons Ramón Orlando Valoy and Marcos Antonio Valoy, as well as vocalist Henry García. Valoy's music evolved from a mix of salsa and merengue to a focus on merengue in the mid-80s, with standout tracks featured on albums released between 1975 and 1983 on labels like Discolor and Kubaney.

Throughout the 80s, Cuco Valoy continued to release music on various labels, including his own CVR label, before returning to Kubaney in 1988. Notable albums from this period include Cuco Valoy Y Su Tribu, Mejor Que Nunca, and Con Sabor Del Tropico. In 1991, Valoy's albums like Salsa Con Coco and A Petición Popular... Salsa showcased a return to his salsa roots, culminating in a reunion with his son Ramón on the album La Gran Obra Musical De Cuco Valoy, released on J & N/Fuga Records.
