Cocoa Tea, born Calvin Scott in Jamaica in 1959, emerged as a standout dancehall artist with his distinctive blend of smooth lovers rock and insightful cultural protest songs. After starting his career in the mid-70s, he gained recognition for hits like "Informer" and "Can't Stop Cocoa Tea." In the late '80s, he collaborated with top artists like Shabba Ranks and Home T on the successful album Holding On. Tea continued to release socially conscious tracks like "Riker's Island" and maintained popularity into the late '90s with hits such as "Good Life" and "Israel King."

Throughout his career, Cocoa Tea showcased versatility and a strong lyrical presence, collaborating with renowned producers like King Jammy and Bobby "Digital" Dixon. His discography includes notable albums such as The Marshall, Come Again, and Holy Mount Zion, released by Motown in 1997. With a steady output of music well into the 2000s, Cocoa Tea remained a respected figure in the reggae and dancehall scenes, blending his smooth vocals with impactful messages.
