Cibo Matto

Originally from Japan, the duo Cibo Matto, consisting of vocalist Miho Hatori and keyboardist/sampler Yuka Honda, moved to New York, where they blended funk samples, hip-hop rhythms, and pop melodies with surreal lyrics in French and broken English. Formed in 1994 after meeting in a noise outfit, Cibo Matto quickly gained fame in the Lower Manhattan scene for their energetic live performances and unique sound, leading to collaborations with notable musicians and a record deal with Warner Bros. Their debut album, Viva! La Woman, released in 1996, was followed by a string of successful releases before the group disbanded in the early 2000s, with Hatori and Honda pursuing various solo projects.

During a hiatus, Honda released four solo albums and joined Plastic Ono Band, while Hatori collaborated with Gorillaz and worked on other projects. In 2011, the duo reunited to work on new material, culminating in the release of Hotel Valentine in 2014, marking Cibo Matto's return after a 15-year hiatus. The album showcased their signature eclectic style and garnered positive reviews, solidifying their place in the music scene once again.
