Biography
Originating from the rich cultural landscape of Northeast Brazil, Chico Science delved into musical experimentation by fusing maracatu with reggae, funk, rap, and rock alongside Gilmar of Lamento Negro's Carnival group. This unique blend, coined by Science as "mangue beat," incorporated regional rhythms into a global pop music context, utilizing instruments like guitar, bass, samplers, and other technological devices. Collaborating with Fred 04 of Mundo Livre S/A, Science's manifesto "Caranguejos com Cérebro" solidified the movement's identity, propelling Chico Science e Nação Zumbi to national recognition and international stages, including performances at Montreux Festival and alongside Gilberto Gil in Central Park.
Following their acclaimed debut album "Da Lama Ao Caos" in 1994, which featured the hit "A Praieira," the group's popularity soared, leading to invitations from major music labels and appearances at prestigious events like the Hollywood Rock Fest and Brazilian MTV's Carnaval Legal. Their second album "Afrociberdelia," characterized by a fusion of pop and electronica, enjoyed rapid success but was overshadowed by the tragic passing of Chico Science in a car accident. Despite this loss, Nação Zumbi persevered with percussionist Jorge du Peixe taking on vocal duties, ensuring the continuation of their pioneering mangue beat legacy.
