Carolina Chocolate Drops

Formed in 2005 at the Black Banjo Gathering, the Carolina Chocolate Drops blend bluegrass, jug music, and prehistoric country and rock. Comprised of Rhiannon Giddens, Dom Flemons, and Justin Robinson (later replaced by Hubby Jenkins), the string band gained acclaim with their 2006 debut, Dona Got a Ramblin Mind. Their 2010 release, Genuine Negro Jig, on Nonesuch Records showcased their spirited irreverence and technical prowess. Over the years, the lineup evolved with the addition of new members like Leyla McCalla and Adam Matta, while Giddens ventured into a solo career in 2015.

The Carolina Chocolate Drops' journey continued with various lineup changes, including the departure of Dom Flemons in 2013. Despite shifts, they remained active, contributing to the Hunger Games soundtrack and releasing albums like Leaving Eden in 2012. With a blend of traditional standards and original compositions, the band's lively performances and old-timey aesthetic captivated audiences, solidifying their place in the contemporary string band scene.
