Fradique and António Mendes Ferreira were born in São Tomé and Príncipe, respectively in Roça Ribeira-Peixe in the south of the country in 1987 and in the capital São Tomé in 1992. Descending from a mix of Cabo Verdeans, Portuguese, and Angolares, they carry a diverse cultural heritage that led them to a passion for music. They attended primary education in São João dos Angolares, the capital of the Caué district, where they were part of the church choir of Santa Cruz dos Angolares.
In 2009, they sought a shorter name with a deeper meaning and mutually chose Calema. Calema refers to a special wave on the African coast, symbolizing how waves always bring something to the shore. Calema brings music, smiles, emotions, culture, and the warmth of São Tomé. They have participated in various competitions from a young age, winning Lusartist and starting work on their debut album "Bomu Kêlê" (Let's Believe in Creole). With songs in Creole and Portuguese, they composed all the tracks, showcasing their surprising mix of clear, powerful voices. Their humble personalities, charismatic musicianship, and angelic presence have left a lasting impression wherever they go.
