Biography
Bread was a popular pop group in the early '70s, known for their melodic soft rock singles written by keyboardist/vocalist David Gates. Formed in 1968, the group consisted of Gates, guitarist/vocalist James Griffin, and guitarist/vocalist Robb Royer. Bread's second album, On the Waters, produced hits like "Make It With You" and "It Don't Matter to Me," solidifying their success. The band went on to release several albums, with their most successful being Baby I'm-a Want You in 1972.
In 1973, Bread disbanded due to a disagreement between Gates and Griffin over songwriting credits. The group briefly reunited in 1976, releasing Lost Without Your Love, but tensions resurfaced, leading to another split. Legal battles over the band name ensued, with Gates and Griffin eventually resolving the issue in 1984. Gates pursued a solo career, achieving some success, while Griffin formed Dreamer in the '90s with Randy Meisner.
