Bobby Byrd

Bobby Byrd played a crucial role in the James Brown show, both as a solo singer and a member of the Famous Flames, Brown's backup vocal group. Byrd's sponsorship of Brown's parole from prison in the '50s led to their collaboration, resulting in several R&B hits produced by Brown. Despite his average vocal talents, Byrd's recordings, especially the hard funk singles of the early '70s, showcased the James Brown groove that fans appreciate. After parting ways with Brown in 1973, Byrd continued to record sporadically and perform until his death from cancer in 2007, having even performed at Brown's memorial service months prior.
