Biography

Blackalicious, known for their positive and spiritual lyrics, formed in the early '90s when founding members Gift of Gab and Chief Xcel reunited in Davis, California. The duo released their debut single "Swan Lake" in 1994 through SoleSides Records, which later became Quannum Records. In 2000, Blackalicious signed with MCA and released their full-length debut album "Nia," followed by "Blazing Arrow" in 2002 featuring various guest artists. The group took a hiatus, with Gab releasing solo albums and Xcel collaborating with Burning House, before returning in 2015 with "Imani, Vol. 1," their fourth album.

Despite a ten-year break between albums, Blackalicious members remained active in the music scene, with Gab releasing solo projects and Xcel forming Burning House. The duo also collaborated on "Imani, Vol. 1," released in 2015, featuring guest appearances from artists like Lateef, Lyrics Born, and Zap Mama. Their music continues to reflect their positive and spiritually uplifting approach, showcasing their unique blend of alternative rap.
