Black Sheep

Black Sheep, a pioneering duo during hip-hop's golden era, blended jazz samples and playful lyrics with a sharp sense of humor, standing out for their socially conscious yet humorous approach. Comprised of Dres and Mista Lawnge, the group achieved success with their hit debut album, A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing, in 1991, but disbanded after the release of Non-Fiction in 1994. Dres continued to release music under the Black Sheep name, with subsequent works such as From the Black Pool of Genius (2010) and Tortured Soul (2018).

Both Dres and Mista Lawnge, hailing from New York and North Carolina, respectively, were drawn to hip-hop in the mid-'80s. The duo's breakout single "Flavor of the Month" in 1991 catapulted them to fame, aligning them with the Native Tongues collective and leading to the success of their debut album. Despite facing challenges with their follow-up release, Black Sheep briefly reunited in the early 2000s and continued to produce music individually, with Dres collaborating on various projects and forming the duo evitaN with Jarobi. Their musical journey culminated in the release of Tortured Soul in 2018, showcasing their enduring influence in the hip-hop scene.
