Black Oak Arkansas

One of the pioneering Southern rock bands, Black Oak Arkansas emerged in the early '70s with a gritty, high-energy sound influenced by the Allman Brothers Band. Led by the flamboyant James "Jim Dandy" Mangrum, the band's rowdy stage presence and raunchy rock style captivated audiences throughout the decade. Their hit single "Jim Dandy" from the album High on the Hog solidified their commercial success, but after a hiatus in the late '70s, the band continued to sporadically record and tour, releasing their latest studio album, Underdog Heroes, in 2019.

Originating from a small Arkansas town, Black Oak Arkansas was formed in the mid-'60s by Mangrum and Rickie Lee Reynolds, eventually evolving from their psychedelic roots as the Knowbody Else. The band's journey included lineup changes, label transitions, and a string of albums that showcased their heavier, raucous sound. Despite facing commercial ups and downs, Black Oak Arkansas maintained a loyal following and continued to perform live, with their enduring legacy marked by their relentless Southern rock spirit.
