Big Jay McNeely, a pioneering tenor saxophonist, revolutionized rock music with his wild and energetic performances, earning him a reputation for blowing up a torrid R&B tornado on stage in various unconventional positions. Growing up in Watts, Los Angeles, McNeely drew inspiration from jazz legends like Illinois Jacquet and Jack McVea, leading to his breakout debut with Savoy Records in 1948 and subsequent hits like "The Deacon's Hop" and "Wild Wig." Throughout the 1950s, McNeely continued to make waves in the music scene, captivating audiences with his electrifying live shows and innovative saxophone techniques.

Despite the decline in popularity of honking saxophonists in the 1960s, Big Jay McNeely's legacy endured as he explored different paths, including working as a mailman and embracing religion before making a triumphant return to music in the early '80s.
