Born on April 24, 1979, near Baltimore, Portner formed Animal Collective with high school friends Noah Lennox, Josh Dibb, and Brian Weitz, bonding over a shared love for bands like Pavement and the Grateful Dead. Their collaboration on the album Spirit They’re Gone, Spirit They’ve Vanished in 2000 marked the band's official beginning. As Animal Collective evolved, Portner also pursued side projects, including collaborations with experimental artists like David Grubbs and Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir of múm.
