Biography

Autopsy, a California-based death metal band with grindcore influences, was formed in the late '80s by Eric Cutler and Chris Reifert, the latter having recently left Death. The band released influential albums like Severed Survival (1991) and Mental Funeral (1991) before disbanding in 1995. They regrouped in 2010, maintaining their ferocious sound through EPs like The Tomb Within and albums like Macabre Eternal. Autopsy's relentless output continued with releases such as Puncturing the Grotesque (2018) and full-lengths like The Headless Ritual (2013) and Morbidity Triumphant (2022).

Founded by former Death drummer Chris Reifert in 1987 in San Francisco, Autopsy quickly gained recognition for their brutal death metal sound. With members Eric Cutler, Danny Coralles, and Ken Sorvari, the band signed with Peaceville Records and released their debut album, Severed Survival, in 1989. Their blend of traditional death metal aggression with grinding riffs and grotesque lyrics set them apart in the metal scene. Despite lineup changes and periods of inactivity, Autopsy persevered, releasing albums like Acts of the Unspeakable (1992) and Shitfun (1995). The band's return in 2010 marked a new era of consistency with albums like The Headless Ritual (2013) and Morbidity Triumphant (2022), showcasing their enduring impact on the death metal genre.
