Atahualpa Yupanqui

Born on January 31, 1908, in Campo de la Cruz, José de la Peña, Pergamino, Argentina, Atahualpa Yupanqui, whose real name was Héctor Roberto Chavero, was a renowned Argentine singer-songwriter, guitarist, poet, and writer. Regarded as one of the most significant figures in Argentine folklore music, his compositions have been performed by numerous esteemed artists like Mercedes Sosa, Los Chalchaleros, and Andrés Calamaro, among others, and remain influential in the global music scene.

Yupanqui began his musical education under Father Rosáenz and later learned guitar from Bautista Almirón at the age of six. Despite health challenges, he continued to perform, even participating in the Festival de Cosquín in January 1990, shortly after undergoing medical treatment in Buenos Aires. Tragically, Yupanqui passed away in Nîmes, France, on May 23, 1992. In accordance with his wishes, his remains were repatriated and now rest in Cerro Colorado, Argentina.
