Biography

Combining African and Celtic traditions with electronic dance elements, Afro Celt Sound System gained international acclaim in the late 1990s led by British musician and producer Simon Emmerson. The group released several successful albums on Real World Records before splitting into two factions over rights to the band's name, with Emmerson claiming primary ownership in 2016 and releasing subsequent albums like The Source and Flight.

Formed in 1995 by Simon Emmerson, Afro Celt Sound System blended African and Celtic music with electronic elements, resulting in their debut album, Volume 1: Sound Magic. Over the years, the group evolved, collaborating with renowned musicians like Robert Plant and Peter Gabriel, before going on hiatus in 2007. Reuniting in 2010, the band faced internal disputes leading to a split, with Emmerson, Johnny Kalsi, and N'Faly Kouyate continuing under the Afro Celt Sound System name, releasing albums like The Source and Flight in subsequent years.
