Biography

Boogie Down Productions, led by the influential MC KRS-One, were pioneers of hardcore and conscious rap in the '80s. Their spare, minimal musical backdrops highlighted KRS-One's booming delivery and incorporation of Jamaican ragga. After the murder of DJ Scott La Rock, KRS-One shifted to socially conscious material, earning the nickname "The Teacher" and influencing both gangsta rap and the positive Native Tongues movement.

KRS-One, born Laurence Krisna Parker, formed BDP in the mid-'80s and released the influential album "Criminal Minded." Despite tragedy and controversy, including the murder of La Rock and clashes with other artists, KRS-One continued to push boundaries with albums like "By All Means Necessary" and "Ghetto Music: The Blueprint of Hip Hop." Transitioning to a solo career in the '90s, KRS-One remains a respected figure in hip-hop, releasing solo albums and engaging in activism and education.
