Biography
Zapp, a funk group from Hamilton, Ohio, emerged in the 1980s with a unique sound blending electro and funk influences. Led by Roger Troutman and comprised of his brothers Lester, Larry, and Tony Troutman, the group gained recognition for their innovative use of vocoder talk boxes and groovy rhythms. Zapp's debut album in 1980, produced in collaboration with Bootsy Collins, achieved success with the hit single "More Bounce to the Ounce." Subsequent releases, including Zapp II in 1982 and Zapp III in 1983, maintained the group's popularity, with notable tracks like "Dance Floor."
Roger Troutman's solo endeavors, such as The Many Facets of Roger and Unlimited!, further showcased his talent and creativity. Despite some commercial setbacks, Zapp continued to make an impact on the R&B charts throughout the late '80s. Tragically, the group's journey came to a devastating end in 1999 when Roger was fatally shot by his brother Larry, marking a somber conclusion to their musical legacy.
