Radu Lupu

Pianist Radu Lupu, born in Galați, Romania on November 30, 1945, was a highly regarded recording artist from the 1970s to the 2000s. Lupu's interpretations, especially of composers like Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, and Beethoven, were celebrated for their sensitivity and depth. He won prestigious competitions like the Van Cliburn and Leeds Piano Competitions, and his recordings, particularly of Schubert, garnered critical acclaim and a Grammy Award in 1995. Lupu, who was named a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2016, retired in 2019 and passed away in 2022 in Lausanne, Switzerland.

Throughout his illustrious career, Radu Lupu remained loyal to the Decca label until the 1990s, showcasing his musical prowess through a diverse repertoire that included Mozart and 20th-century compositions. Despite initial criticisms, Lupu's performances with renowned orchestras like the Cleveland Orchestra and the New York Philharmonic solidified his reputation as a formidable pianist. His legacy comprises over 35 recordings, highlighting his exceptional artistry and enduring impact on the classical music scene.
