Biography

R.L. Burnside, a prominent figure in Delta juke joint blues, was born in Lafayette County, Mississippi, and honed his rhythmic style under the influence of Fred McDowell. In the 1990s, he gained recognition and success with the support of Fat Possum Records, releasing albums like "Bad Luck City" and "Too Bad Jim" that showcased his raw electric guitar sound. Burnside's music, reminiscent of Delta blues legends like Muddy Waters and John Lee Hooker, captured the essence of traditional blues with a contemporary twist.

Throughout his career, Burnside collaborated with musicians like Junior Kimbrough and Jon Spencer, creating a blend of country blues and rock influences. Despite facing health challenges and a heart attack in 2004, Burnside continued to record and perform until his passing in 2005 at the age of 79. His legacy lives on through his timeless recordings and contributions to the Delta blues tradition.
