Formed in 1981 in Durango, Patrulla 81 established themselves as Duranguense pioneers with a unique sound characterized by the use of a melodeon instead of electric keyboards. Their early recordings, including "Ojitos" and "El Lirio," gained regional success, leading to performances across Durango and a breakthrough hit, "Tu Mirada," which earned them their first major exposure on Radio Canon. This success allowed the band to tour Mexico and the United States, culminating in the release of their debut album, "No Aprendi a Olvidar," under the Garmex label. In 2004, their live album "En Vivo Desde Dallas, Texas" reached number four on Billboard's Regional Mexican charts, solidifying their presence in the genre and leading to accolades such as "La Revelacion del Ano" at the Premios Que Buena.

Since their breakthrough, Patrulla 81 has maintained a prominent position in the Regional Mexican music scene, consistently charting in both the United States and Mexico. Their participation in the documentary "La Verdadera Historia de la Musica Duranguense" and performances in cities like Los Angeles, Denver, and Chicago further solidified their status as a leading force in the genre.
