Austin Lunn formed the one-man black metal project Panopticon in 2007, drawing influence from genre pioneers like Darkthrone and Emperor. Panopticon's early albums featured lo-fi production and anarchist politics, evolving to incorporate Appalachian folk elements alongside abrasive black metal. Lunn's discography includes albums like Collapse, Kentucky, and Roads to the North, exploring unique musical fusions and political commentary.
With releases like Autumn Eternal and the double album Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness, Panopticon continued to blur genre boundaries, combining black metal with Americana influences. Lunn's 2021 album …and Again Into the Light showcased a mix of Americana, country, and folk with doom and black metal elements, receiving critical acclaim. The Rime of Memory in 2023 further delved into textured arrangements and incendiary black metal, solidifying Panopticon's reputation for innovative and emotive music.
