Biography

In 1969, John Dawson teamed up with Jerry Garcia and other musicians to form the New Riders of the Purple Sage, a band known for their classic Americana sound. Their self-titled debut album in 1971 was well-received for its psychedelic country vibe, featuring Dawson's original songs and Garcia's pedal steel guitar work. Throughout the '70s, the band experienced lineup changes and achieved success with albums like Powerglide and The Adventures of Panama Red, earning a gold record and radio hit.

By the late '70s and early '80s, the New Riders of the Purple Sage saw more lineup shifts, with John Dawson eventually retiring in 2000. Despite the changes, the band's legacy was honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002. A reformation in 2006 led to new studio albums, continuing the band's musical journey. The archive of the New Riders of the Purple Sage remains active, preserving their music and history, as evidenced by the 2019 release Thanksgiving In New York City.
